The Sierra Leone Community Study:
How a Two-Pill System is Changing the Face of Global Sanitation
At Dr Water Loo, we live by a simple but powerful motto: "SANITATION is DIGNITY".
For many of us, a clean, fresh-smelling, and fully functioning toilet is something we take for granted. But in countless peri-urban and rural communities across the globe, sanitation is a daily, grueling challenge. Overflowing pit latrines, unmanageable faecal sludge, offensive odors, and swarms of disease-carrying flies don't just create an unpleasant environment—they strip away human dignity and threaten public health with diseases like cholera and diarrhea.
But what if the solution to this massive, systemic crisis was as simple as dropping two small, organically-based tablets into a pit?
In early 2023, the Government of Sierra Leone decided to put this exact question to the test. What happened next was nothing short of a sanitation revolution.
The Ultimate Stress Test: Freetown, Sierra Leone
In February 2023, the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation (specifically the Directorate of Environmental Health and Sanitation) launched a comprehensive pilot program to evaluate the true power of Dr Water Loo.
To ensure the product was tested under the most rigorous and realistic conditions, the Ministry selected 267 households across three incredibly diverse landscapes in Freetown:
The Coastal Slums: 113 households in the waterlogged KrooBay community.
The Flat Plains: 99 households in the Brookfield’s community.
The Hilly Terrain: 55 households in the Sumalia Town community.
The challenge was immense. These communities were battling severe sanitation issues, including overwhelming odors, visual waste, and dangerous fly infestations. The Ministry distributed the Dr Water Loo 100% natural microbial tablets—which introduce oxygen and specialized bacteria to rapidly digest solid waste—and watched closely to see if the claims held up.
The Jaw-Dropping Results
The data collected after the application of Dr Water Loo didn't just show improvement; it showed a complete transformation of the communities' living conditions.
Here is what the study found:
A 100% Success Rate in Sludge Management: Perhaps the most staggering statistic from the entire study was that after using the Dr Water Loo treatment, not a single household needed to empty their latrine or septic tank. The organic microbes aggressively broke down the solid waste, drastically reducing the volume of the sludge—especially in the hilly and flat locations.
Zero Flies. Zero: Before the treatment, flies and pests were an extremely high-presence nuisance. During the second phase of the trial, researchers noted absolutely NO presence of flies around the treated latrines and septic tanks. By removing the food source, the vector for food-borne diseases was entirely eliminated.
Odors Vanished: The offensive, overpowering smells that once plagued the latrines were remarkably neutralized, creating a fresh and safe environment that residents were no longer afraid to use.
A Visibly Cleaner Environment: Field officers reported that there were NO visible faeces left around the latrines or septic tanks in the second phase of the study.
Overwhelming Community Approval: At the end of the trial, an incredible 83% of household beneficiaries explicitly stated they were completely satisfied with how effectively Dr Water Loo worked. Community stakeholders were so thrilled that they began urgently requesting more tablets for their facilities.

Beyond the Pit: The Ripple Effect of Clean Sanitation
The success of Dr Water Loo goes beyond just breaking down waste. Because the product is 100% natural and poses no threat to humans, animals, or vegetation, the breakdown process safely turns hazardous waste into usable "grey water". This means communities aren't just solving a waste problem; they are creating a new resource for agricultural irrigation to grow lush, healthy crops. Furthermore, by eliminating the harmful bacteria and the flies that spread them, the treatment acts as a frontline defense against primary health-related diseases.
The Way Forward: Scaling the Miracle
The pilot program was such a resounding, undeniable success that the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation couldn't keep it to themselves. Following the trial, the Ministry officially appealed to the World Health Organization (WHO) to help develop a model that will scale the distribution of Dr Water Loo across the entire country of Sierra Leone.
The takeaway is clear: We don't need harsh, toxic chemicals or expensive, impossible infrastructure overhauls to immediately improve the lives of millions. With the right science, nature provides the cure.
Backed by science, proven in the field, and trusted by governments, Dr Water Loo is doing more than just cleaning toilets. It is restoring human dignity, one tablet at a time.
